Title: 30 High Street, Earlsferry, Fife
Morris & Spottiswood took on the challenge to turn a former shop into a four bedroom home. The owners wanted to create an open living space and maximise light exposure within the property. To achieve this the demolition of one rear extension and the construction of another on the C-listed building was essential.
The insertion of a steel structure allowed the removal of existing walls which had divided the rear of the house. This created an open plan kitchen, dining and living area allowing natural light to flow through.
Inserting rooflighting also maximised the flow of air and light throughout the home.
A major challenge with this project was access to the building. As the road the property is located on is very narrow, expert co-ordination and management of the delivery of materials was essential to ensure no disruptions were caused.
It was key in this project to create the right balance between old and new. This was achieved by repainting the listed front elevation and retaining traditional features within the interior.
