Apprenticeships aren’t just for a week at Morris & Spottiswood

The National Apprenticeship Week 2017 took place last month, however at Morris & Spottiswood, we focus on Apprenticeships throughout the year.

Since August 2015, Morris & Spottiswood have been working with Jobs & Business Glasgow, when we secured a small refurb project at their Bridgend Nursery facility in Gorbals. Jobs & Business Glasgow provide Employment, Business and Development assistance and advice to Glasgow’s unemployed and new Businesses.

Whilst carrying out these works in the Gorbals, we were approached by their Employer Engagement team to discuss possible Work Experience placements for their students who undertake their various programmes, as well as providing Employer Talks to the students. Paul Roan, Commercial Director, has since provided several talks to a classroom of students, discussing his role, experience, life at Morris & Spottiswood, as well as giving advice on CV’s and interview techniques.

Since then, we have so far provided 15 Work Experience placements providing on the job exposure to Trades and Technical Knowledge, as well as the general practice of working life. In fact, we have actually employed 2 Students on full-time positions with Morris & Spottiswood, following successfully completing their work experience: Sean Glennon, Apprentice Painter and Andrew McKenzie, M&E Estimating Administration Assistant.
Apprenticeship
This week, we have had a further 2 Work Experience placements – Mark Mcphail (17) and Tony Cantley (17), working with our Maintenance Division in Glasgow. Mark is on his second work placement with Morris & Spottiswood, and has found the experience has changed his thoughts on becoming a Joiner. Mark had studied Joinery at College, but it wasn’t until he did on the job training with Morris & Spottiswood, he realised it is what he wanted to do. Mark said “I learned more in 3 days than I did in a year studying Joinery at College”. Ross Hepburn, who took Mark out on jobs was more than complimentary of Mark’s commitment and capabilities, with work ranging from showing him how to use circular saw works, to fitting a digilock.

We are delighted with the results we have seen from the Students who have joined us with Jobs & Business Glasgow on placements and further employment, and look forward to our future partnership.
