Historic surprise at Royal Bank…

We made a fascinating discovery whilst undertaking the refurbishment of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Head Office (Dundas House) in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

The new banking hall floor was to form a very important aspect of the design, influenced by historical images of the original banking hall. But as works progressed to remove the existing linoleum flooring, it soon became apparent that the original tiled floor remained underneath.

After many discussions with Edinburgh City Council Planning Department and Historic Scotland it was decided (for safety reasons) that it would have to be covered over. However, working with the Bank we have saved a section of the original flooring to use as part of an exhibition for the re-opening of the Branch.

Dundas House was originally built as a mansion house by Sir Lawrence Dundas of Kerse in 1774.
