Senior Quantity Surveyor

The role of Quantity Surveyor takes commercial responsibility for the contract performance for allocated works to maximise both turnover and profitability for contracts allocated within the Company's National Frameworks team.

Reporting to the National Framework’s Key Account Commercial Manager, the role of Senior Quantity Surveyor will assist in financial and contractual control and co-ordination of specified projects to the budgeted cost and programme to the Client’s satisfaction. You will also undertake Quantity Surveying functions on the larger, more complex projects undertaken by the business and have overall commercial responsibility for the projects within their business control and to take responsibility for the activities of surveying staff under your direct control.

You will be expected to show a great deal of proactivity as the role will be relatively autonomous, with regular meetings scheduled with the Commercial Manager to review overall commercial performance. You will provide monthly reports to the Commercial Manager on all commercial matters. As such you will need to gather all the salient information from the QS team and then report that via monthly reporting templates. You will be expected to have interrogated CVR’s, cash, accruals etc. and present your findings in a formal written manner, escalating any risks and proposed action plans.

To be considered for the role, you will be able to demonstrate effective working relationships with project delivery team members to drive a unified team approach to undertake a full self-managed delivery solution to key clients. You will be expected to collaborate effectively with our in-house M&E team to delivery efficiencies through a true ‘One Team’ approach – one CVR, one project QS, preliminaries and such like. You will maintain effective communications throughout the contract delivery, providing advice on project needs to ensure adequate commercial support is provided. You will also provide input to employee development and succession planning through the Company’s IPR and talent management processes.

Personal Attributes:

Strong leadership and team management skills coupled with a decisive problem-solving ability and excellent time management skills are imperative to this role. In addition, you should have excellent communications skills as you will be required to express your opinions both in writing and verbally at internal and external meetings. You should be able to demonstrate a good track record of building effective relationship with clients and internal team members to meet their expectations as well as to deliver for the business.

An analytical approach with an excellent eye for detail and excellent time management skills are imperative to the role. You will have strong commercial acumen with good negotiation skills and the ability to liaise effectively with clients and architects to maintain/build robust relationships. Successful candidates will preferably come from a Fitout / construction background and will have at least 3 to 4 years working experience of managing projects independently (up to the value of £5m) and be able to manage 2-3 projects at any one time.

Other information:

Successful candidates will work out of the Edinburgh office and be based on site as and when the job requires. Standard hours of work: 8am – 5pm Monday to Thursday, 8am – 4pm on Fridays (one hour lunch each day).

The successful candidate must:

  • Be flexible in terms of hours work
  • Hold a full UK driving licence
  • Be computer literate, be fully IT literate in Word and Excel (at intermediate level)
  • Hold a BSc degree in Quantity Surveying (minimum 2:1)
  • Have at least 5 years’ previous QS experience of working in a similar role (preferably with Fitout frameworks background and construction experience)
  • Must have pre- and post-contract experience
  • Experience of completing end of month financial reports and be comfortable presenting the information to the board when required/requested by the commercial manager
  • Previous experience at a blue-chip contractor
  • St Hold a CSCS regular site visitor card
  • Strong understanding of all forms of contract: NEC4, JCT etc.
