Acting as Principal Contractor, we delivered a multifaceted refurbishment project within the Liskamp laboratory complex, which is located in the University of Glasgow’s A-listed Joseph Black building. The finished labs provide a highly functional, modern research environment. We followed a detailed conservation plan to complete this project. This ensured that we fully respected the historic nature of the building we were working in. As a result, the project won the Conservation Category of the Design Awards 2014.

DELIVERY

The project involved a wide range of building and installation work, including the complete strip out of the old labs and the creation of new windows, ceilings and wall linings and the installation of new internal partitions and internal door sets and ironmongery. It also involved the installation of multiple contractor design elements, including laboratory furniture, cold rooms, automatic HVAC controls and industrial gas installations.

The works were undertaken in a live University campus environment and required extensive preparatory work, logistical planning and the co-ordination of specialist sub-contractors and supply chain partners (a number of whom were brought on board to assist in the development of the design). To ensure success, we worked extensively with the labs’ end users, including Professor Liskamp, to ensure that the facilities met their operational and quality requirements.
