Architectural Technician / Technologist, McLennan Architects, Any Office

Morris & Spottiswood Ltd is a leading provider of fitout, housing, maintenance and M&E services to the retail, banking, commercial, education, housing and healthcare sectors across Scotland and North West / West of England. Our offices are based in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Warrington and Leeds.

We are currently recruiting an Architectural Technician/Technologist within our McLennan Architects business in Warrington. The successful candidate will be engaged in all design stages within the company’s scope of service, working closely with the Architectural Director and other design team staff. They will design, detail, specify and deliver new and renovated spaces within a variety of sectors, including retail banking, commercial, residential, industrial and leisure. They will be expected to provide design team technical support in all project phases, from initial concept design and through the detailed development stage, while assisting the delivery teams during the site delivery phase. They will also be expected to have knowledge of design excellence in the fields of sustainability and health and safety, ensuring that design risks are mitigated in the design process.

Experience and Background

Candidates considered for this role will already have been working as an Architectural Technician/Technologist position with practical project and site experience required in a UK-based Architectural practice.

The individual is also expected to have at least 1+ years relevant experience.

Personal Attributes

The successful individual will be a dedicated and results-driven Architectural Technician / Technologist with a minimum of 12 months of practical project experience in a variety of sectors. We are looking for a team player, and someone with a decisive problem-solving ability and excellent time management skills are imperative to this role.

You should have excellent graphic, written and verbal communication skills as you will be required to express your design and specifications graphically, in writing and verbally within the internal design team and to the wider project team and consultants. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a good track record of working with clients to meet their expectations as well as to deliver for the business.

Key Skills

  • Experience in delivery of all RIBA stages and on-site works from inception to completion.
  • 1+ years of practical project and site experience required in a UK-based Architectural practice.
  • Design detailing for new build and interior spaces, including permanent architectural details and temporary elements.
  • Ability to assess and meet client requirements and desires through regular meetings and communications.
  • Produce sketches, detail drawings, detailed specifications and general arrangement floor plans throughout the RIBA work stages using computer-aided design programs (CAD).
  • AutoCAD expertise is required and working knowledge of Sketch-Up Pro/BIM/Revit is desirable. BIM and Revit training will be provided as required.
  • Ability to draft and produce full written design specifications / NBS.
  • Adhere to national and local building and safety codes with every design element. Strong knowledge of English Planning Legislation and Building Standards. Working knowledge of Scottish Building Standards is also preferable.
  • Work closely with various colleagues, including architects, engineers, contractors, acousticians, and building inspectors.
  • Research specifications, materials and finishes to support the design team on technical issues influencing detailed design development.
  • Work within project time schedules to coordinate the completion of staged tasks through to the final project completion
  • Conduct on-site visits and site observations and provide recommendations to ensure alignment with design specifications.
  • Design and/or select furniture, materials, décor and finishes within project budgetary constraints.
  • Degree-level qualifications in Architectural Technology and ability to demonstrate the required experience and knowledge of working within the construction industry with 1+ years of technical design experience since qualification.

Other information

Our standard business hours are 8-5 Monday-Thursday and 8-4 on a Friday (1hr lunch break each day). We have adopted a hybrid working model so you will have flexibility to work in the office (based in Warrington) or from home, or a mixture of both. The role will involve working / visiting live site environments to review design delivery and to ensure the site delivery meets the proposed specifications, so a driving license and own car are preferable.

  • Be fully IT literate in AutoCAD, SketchUp Pro, Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel with Revit / BIM experience beneficial (BIM and Revit training can be provided).
