Every firm says they care about their people. We mean it. We’re a family firm with a rich heritage and an impressive track record of growth and delivery. We’re committed to best practice in everything we do – especially when it comes to our people. We invest in them; we believe in providing ongoing training and development opportunities and making everyone feel valued.

We want to create an environment where people can thrive and build fulfilling, long-term careers – to help make this happen we invest heavily in training and professional development to help our people make the most of their talents, especially when it comes to our apprentices – the next generation of talent.

To date we have trained a total of over 500 apprentices and we continue to have a wide range of opportunities on offer. Our teams work on some of the most exciting projects in the industry, projects that can make a real difference to people’s lives, projects that bring a sense of achievement and real job satisfaction.

The proof? Our staff stay with us. In fact, almost a quarter of our workforce have been with us for a decade or more. We’re proud to be able to offer a workplace that people want to be part of.

And it’s not just our team that think we’re doing well on that front. Late last year we were awarded Gold accredited membership in The 5% Club’s 2022-23 Employer Audit, in recognition of our continued development of our employees through “earn and learn” schemes such as apprenticeships, our graduate schemes and sponsored student placements.

As Andy Russell, Operations Director with Livingston Building Services (one of Morris & Spottiswood’s subsidiary companies) explains, “apprenticeships are vital – these young people are the future of our business”. In 2022, we welcomed 18 apprentices and this year we plan to welcome 15 young people across the M&S Group. This fresh talent helps us thrive, and stops our business stagnating, but it’s not just us that benefits. Our apprentices get some of the best training around, with the opportunity to earn while they learn and to take their talent as far as they want to. In fact, with our ten-year commitment to ensuring that 70 per-cent of our senior management team will have come up through the business, today’s apprentices could well be tomorrow’s leaders.

Apprenticeships are hard work and require commitment – but with the opportunity to work on exciting projects early on in a career, a little hard work is well worth the effort. This is a mix of hands-on work and great training, and the opportunities to develop your skills don’t have to stop at the end of your apprenticeship; ongoing learning and training is part of what we do, so – when you work with us – your skills and knowledge will always be up to date.

Our people are what make our business. They shape the spaces we create for our clients; they add value to everything we do. They define who we are and what our future holds. That’s why we make every effort to recognise and reward their input, and to make sure they have every opportunity to make the most of their talents and to build a great career with us.

About our apprentice opportunities…

National Apprentice Week takes place 6th – 10th February, during this time we’ll be showcasing our apprenticeship opportunities, and introducing some of our current apprentices.

This year we plan to recruit 15 apprentices across joinery, plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation, air conditioning, high voltage and fibre optic across our sites in Glasgow, Livingston, Leeds and London.

Our apprenticeship intake begins in March this year. If you are looking to start shaping your career in building and construction, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
