The project involved the upgrade and refurbishment of an existing steel portal framed shed and single storey extension to provide a Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU) for Network Rail. The first of its type, the Edinburgh MDU has helped to reinstate a previously lost sense of pride in the workforce and has set a bench mark for all further MDUs within Network Rail.

"The feel of the place is great. I took a walk round the other day just observing. There was a mix of people working at their desk, having coffee in the breakout areas and having meetings in the informal meeting areas. It was great to see."

The brief was to create a contemporary workspace solution alongside a tough, robust, work yard environment. The notion of creating one place, to house two contrasting workspaces was initially a challenge, but was resolved through creative design.

The project adopted a sustainable solution by using shipping containers to form meeting rooms, kitchenette units and stair core. This reduced the project’s costs and environmental impact. Waste recycling was prioritised; even the redundant waste container frames was adapted into cycle shelters.

Early engagement via a Design & Build procurement route ensured our fitout and M&E divisions worked effectively with the Network Rail Design Team and the appointed engineers, KJ Tait.

The project incorporated a wide range of innovate design and construction techniques which ensured that the refurbishment was delivered to BREEAM standards.
