We helped deliver a new, £1million state-of-the-art care unit for teenage cancer patients at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital. The project involved the creation of a unique new facility that provides a home-from-home environment for many sick young people and their families. Our work involved the complete strip out of the existing ward and the formation of the new rooms. We installed all finishes, mechanical and electrical services, medical equipment and fixtures and fittings.
The contract under which we were employed was run under NEC 3 - target cost.
The new unit we helped to create is housed on the former Ward 3 of the hospital’s Cancer Centre. It provides care for 17 to 24 year olds with cancer across the East of Scotland.
The new centre comprises four in-patient bedrooms, a day care room for outpatient treatment, a TV and chill out zone, a gaming area, computer desks, a beverage bay and dining area. Unlike ‘ordinary’ hospital wards, it also has a social hub that includes a kitchen where young people and their families can prepare meals. Patients have as access to wifi throughout the new facility.
