From ABCs to PhDs – the right learning environment makes all the difference

Whether they’re learning to read and write, or writing their dissertation, every student should be able to learn in the best environment possible. We understand that what makes a great environment to learn your ABCs, isn’t the best place to work on a PhD, and – having delivered a broad range of education projects – we’ve learned a lot about what makes a place a great space to learn. We know that schools, colleges, and universities can’t close whilst work is going on, so we’ve mastered the art of working in live settings, and of doing so safely and with minimal disruption.

We’ve delivered refurbishment, fit out and fast-track projects across the UK for numerous primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities (including the University of Glasgow, University of York, Manchester Metropolitan University, and University of Strathclyde). We’ve worked on all sorts of spaces from classrooms to labs, residential accommodation and sports facilities. For each project we work closely with our clients to ensure that our project – and how we deliver them – works for their needs and fits into their plans.

Wherever possible we work around term dates to ensure minimal disruption, but in cases where that’s not feasible, we’re able to work safely, effectively, and efficiently in busy campus environments. With over three decades of experience behind us, we know what matters and how to deliver it. It also means that we’ve developed strong, effective, and reliable local and national supply chains, and the key to the success of our projects is working in partnership with our trusted suppliers and experts. It gives us the power to resource what’s needed for every project, no matter how unusual or challenging.

Many of the buildings we work in and on have rich and important histories, and we’re adept at delivering the job in a way that respects, preserves, and protects their heritage. Our team have extensive conservation experience, which is just one of the many reasons numerous historic universities trust their listed building to us. Where extensions and redevelopments are required, we work with either our own designers and architects or those appointed by the client to create effective, practical, but sympathetic spaces. But no matter what the challenge, we never lose sight of the needs of those who’ll be using the space.

Public Sector Lead, Matthew Wall, says “Over the last five years, we’ve successfully delivered in excess of five hundred education projects, ranging from labs to residential accommodation and everything in between, and with values of between £10k to over £5m. From primary school classrooms to university cafeterias, our team have successfully delivered and with minimal impact on staff and students. It’s not just about keeping everyone safe, it’s about making sure that we don’t disrupt ongoing educational programs, so we work closely with everyone involved to make sure that we fit into their plans, factoring in exams, term dates, demand for the spaces, and the needs of staff, students and members of the community. Our goal is always to create great learning environments, and that includes making sure students can still learn safely and effectively while we’re on site.”

It's not just academic futures we take care of, we’re committed to sustainable working methods across all our projects and can even help you plan and realise the next steps on your own sustainable journey. In addition, we believe in supporting and working with the communities that we’re part of, so as well as high profile, multi-million-pound projects, we get involved at local level. Recently, some of our team have facilitated donations of paint and carpets to a local school as part of our social value initiative, whilst other team members have visited schools to talk about the industry and construction site safety, culminating in a den building challenge (there really is no project that we can’t turn our hands to!).

But it’s not just teachers and students that give our work gold stars, we’ve recently won Learning Places Scotland’s Refurbishment of the Year Award for our work at the Royal College South Laboratory Robotics Hub at The University of Strathclyde in recognition of our innovative approach, willingness to develop solutions and collaborative working. It’s an achievement we’re particularly proud of and which we’re determined to build upon.
