Last week Morris & Spottiswood took part in Govan High’s “Developing Govans’ Girls” event. We spent an afternoon hosting workshops and activities aimed at encouraging girls in 1st and 2nd year to consider a career in industries such as construction, engineering, law and the police and fire services – all industries with a traditionally low uptake by girls.

The day kicked off with a hilarious motivational comedy workshop, hosted by award winning comedian Anna Devitt, recently voted Best New Comedian in Scotland. The workshop was followed by talks from Julia Carruthers, Trainee QS at Morris & Spottiswood and a guest speaker from Strathclyde University School of Engineering. The event finished with an open mic session where the 1st and 2nd year pupils could ask questions to panel representatives from companies including ourselves, DWF Law, Robertson’s Engineering, Strathclyde University Business School, Scottish Fire & Rescue and Scottish Police Service.

This was a great event in terms of encouraging young women to consider careers in the construction industry and Govan High are to be commended for their forward thinking and commitment to broadening the horizons of their pupils.
