After over 20 years working in a construction business (minus a hard hat), I’ve seen a positive shift as more women enter the industry in technical, management and senior leadership roles. This shift reflects how society has progressed but also how construction can be an attractive place to work for women.

Who would have thought a global pandemic would lead to a positive change by forcing the Construction industry to sit up and realise that presenteeism doesn’t necessarily equal productivity. By offering flexibility in hours and working patterns, we can open the door to a more diverse talent pool. Hybrid working has been a game changer for our business. Whilst not without it challenges, it works because it is built on trust and this is respected by our teams.

Construction may still be traditionally male-dominated but it also presents a multitude of benefits with a diverse workforce. Women bring unique perspectives and problem-solving approaches to construction projects. By seeking diversity within our teams, we can tap into a broader range of ideas, leading to more innovative and effective solutions.

Encouraging more women to pursue careers in construction not only expands the talent pool but also enriches the industry with diverse skill sets. In our business we have seen a growth in women employed in professionally qualified and senior management roles; they act as role models for future generations by challenging traditional gender stereotypes.

We work hard to create an environment where women feel valued, respected, and supported and this is essential for the long-term success of the construction industry. It is not just about promoting flexibility and a healthy work-life balance, we want to offer challenging career prospects.

While significant progress has been made, challenges and barriers still exist for women in the industry, including bias, discrimination, and lack of representation in leadership roles. By acknowledging and addressing these barriers head-on, we can create a more inclusive industry for all.

By showcasing the women in our business, we can encourage more women to enter and thrive in the industry.
